Book Making

Students learn various techniques and use creative materials to design a unique book for their own personal expression.

Choose from the following:

• Accordian books (half day, grades 1-3)
• Hand bound books (full day, grades 4-12)

Collagraph

Your students view printed artwork from the globe's most celebrated artists and rediscover texture through the art of collagraph. Students also design, create and print a series of amazing collagraph prints!

An interactive look at Harbourfront Centre's art and installations! This full day intensive programme includes a visit to one of Harbourfront Centre's gallery spaces to learn about contemporary art, followed by time in the studio to work on a responsive project.

Contemporary Art Exploration

FULL DAY

An interactive look at Harbourfront Centre's art and installations. Your class brings in a current news event for creative exploration through an art form. We choose and explore one on site installation and discuss the artist’s statement/abstract. We begin our day by asking, "Art is another language, another way of communication. How many languages do you speak? What might have lead to this artist’s need to communicate their ideas globally?"

Contemporary Clay Vessels

VISUAL ARTS AND CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

Students explore our contemporary ceramics studio and talk to a Harbourfront Centre Artist in Residence to see the possibilities in contemporary ceramic craft. Using what they learn and various hand-building techniques (slab, pinch pot and coil) they create their own contemporary clay vessel.

Drawing

Students learn a range of drawing techniques, including gesture, contour and the exploratory art of self portraiture.

Graffiti Art

VISUAL ARTS & CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

FULL DAY

Graffiti is used as a tool for artists to communicate and relates to ideas used in propaganda posters during the Second World War, to the street of Keith Harring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and to the controversial contemporary stencil artist Banksy. Explore and debate the graffiti found on buildings and underpasses and engage in a discussion about What is Art?

This programme gives students an opportunity to create their own 'tag' using techniques we have discussed throughout the day. They will also have the time to use their art work to communicate a message dealing with an issue they feel to be important to them.

Lino Print with Museum of Inuit Art (MIA) Tour

FULL DAY HALF DAY

Your students start with a tour of The Museum of Inuit Art in The Queens Quay Terminal and discover the beauty of Inuit art, while learning how the Inuit use the elements and principles of design in their prints. Students learn the techniques of relief printmaking using a soft linoleum block and create their own lino-block prints.

HALF DAY

Students explore the wonders of colour, shape and imagination through paint, and experiment with a variety of techniques to express themselves.

Paper Mask

VISUAL ARTS AND CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

4-8

HALF DAY FULL DAY

Students explore the history and tradition of masks, and experiment with paper sculpture techniques and 3D forms. Student will flex their imaginations by creating a mask of their own.

Puppet Making

K-8

FULL DAY HALF DAY

Students learn the rich history of puppets from around the world, explore the world of stories and create a one of a kind puppet of their own using a variety of materials.

Choose from:

• Rod Puppets (grades K-3 half day)
• Shadow Puppets (grades 4-8 full day)

Young Architects

VISUAL ARTS & CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

6-8

FULL DAY

Think Outside the box! Using paper sculpture techniques students will have an opportunity to collaborate and create a new vision of Toronto's waterfront. Students will visit our architecture gallery and discuss the themes of the current exhibit.

Young Collagraph Printmaking with Museum of Inuit Art (MIA) Tour

FULL DAY HALF DAY

Your students explore the wonders of printmaking including line, texture and pattern and create a small series of prints to take home. In a full day visit, students visit the MIA and see examples of Inuit art.
