CRAFT STUDIO COURSES

Taught by the Craft Studio Artists-in-Residence, these beginner and intermediate courses for adults give you hands-on creative expression.

All courses take place in the Craft Studio at Harbourfront Centre. Pre-registration is required. Please contact the number indicated for the registration form and class requirements. Fees are paid directly to the instructor. A 50% deposit is required. All classes are subject to change without notice.

Amanda McCavour

Glass Blowing

This course covers solid (i.e. paperweights) and blown forms (cups, bowls and plates), colour application, hot and cold techniques and use of studio equipment. Courses are available September – May.

Introduction to Jewellery

No experience required! Students learn a wide range of jewellery techniques (piercing, soldering, drilling, filing, polishing, surface techniques etc...) through creating samples and finished pieces. By the end of the class students will complete a silver band ring (for yourself or someone else), a silver cast piece of your choice (ring, pendant, cufflinks etc...) and a final project of your choice. Registration includes all supplies (including copper and brass; silver is extra, but very affordable). Courses are available year-round.

Intermediate Jewellery

Prerequisite: Introduction to Jewellery or previous metalsmithing experience. Intermediate class content varies with instructor and skill level of participants. Past techniques covered: simple stone settings (bezel or claw), etching, chain making, simple clasps and others. Registration includes most supplies (sterling silver is extra, but very affordable). Courses are available year-round.

Pottery – Beginner's Class

No previous throwing experience required! Learn to make cups, vases and bowls on the pottery wheel and handbuilding. Techniques can include throwing, coiling, slab, trimming, decoration and finishing your pieces. Courses are available year-round.

Pottery – Intermediate Class

Some previous throwing experience required. The Intermediate Class is a follow-up course to further the basic techniques learned in the introductory class. The focus is on developing skills to produce somewhat larger pieces and how to alter and add on to wheel thrown forms to produce other types of vessels such as pitchers or teapots. Courses are available year-round.

Textiles – Feltmaking

Covers wet felt making processes including flat felting and laminating as well as making seamless and 3 dimensional objects. Examples of felted objects will be provided, and each student will have the chance to work on a project of their choosing. Courses available year-round.

Textiles – How to get it on

Learn how to get images onto fabric through silkscreening, machine embroidery, appliqué and silk-painting. Workshops available year-round.

Textiles – Needle Felting Workshop

Students will learn how to create three dimensional accessories using the needle felting processes. Learn to 'draw with fibre' to create beautiful images on cloth using needle felting techniques. Each student will have the opportunity to work on a self-directed project that they can take home with them. Workshops available year-round.

Textiles – Polychromatic Screenprinting Workshop

Learn how to produce water-colour like images on paper and cloth using a method of screenprinting that involves painting directly onto screens using concentrated dyes. Courses available year-round.

Each student will learn how to make screen positives, coat and shoot silk screens. Students will take home their own original screen prints at the end of the day. Workshops available year-round.

Textiles – Silk Screen Printing

Students will learn how to prepare screen positives, coat and shoot silkscreens. The course will cover a more in-depth approach to silk screen printing as we explore how to make one and two coloured screen prints. Students will have the opportunity to work on a self directed project which may include printing cards, posters, t-shirts or clothing, and will leave with a greater body of screen printed work.
